How it works

From fieldwork
to financial metrics

Every BARS assessment follows the same structured sequence — from signed proposal to delivered report. The steps below are consistent across all engagement types; what varies is the scope applied at each stage.

Every engagement begins with a signed proposal confirming scope, fees, and visit timing. The comparison below sets out what each engagement type includes — if the right fit isn't immediately clear, contact BARS Institute directly.

All engagement types include a stratified GLRaV-3 survey with GPS waypoints and a Tier 1 trunk disease visual assessment. What differs is the number of field visits, the additional testing applied, and the financial outputs produced.

1
Pre-engagement

Signed engagement proposal

Scope, fee, visit timing, and deliverables are confirmed in writing before any field work begins. The proposal sets the terms of the engagement and ensures the assessment is calibrated to the property and decision context.

2
Pre-field

Stratified sampling plan

Before the field visit, a GPS-referenced sampling plan is prepared based on block geometry, vine spacing, and any known risk zones. Composite bay waypoints are allocated across edge, interior, and symptom-cluster strata — so sampling effort is directed where it matters most.

3
Field visit

Sampling and trunk disease assessment

We attend site to collect composite tissue samples and complete a block-wide Tier 1 visual trunk disease assessment. GPS coordinates are recorded for every bay. All samples are sealed and placed into cold chain immediately on collection.

4
Logistics

Chain of custody to the laboratory

Samples are transferred to an accredited laboratory under documented chain of custody. Traceability is maintained from the moment of collection through to the diagnostic result.

5
Diagnostics

Laboratory testing

The laboratory performs RT-qPCR testing on the submitted composite pools. Where positive pools are identified, follow-up testing proceeds in line with the engagement scope.

6
Analysis

BARS calculations and financial analysis

Laboratory results are combined with field observations, block inputs, and analytical parameters to generate the BARS outputs — prevalence estimation, spread modelling, financial impairment calculations, and sensitivity analysis.

This is where biological condition becomes a financial figure: BVS and BGS current-condition scores, NPV impairment at P50 and P95, replant trigger year, and intervention value.
7
Delivery

Report delivery

The completed report is issued in PDF format, structured for direct use in credit files, valuation workpapers, or transaction due diligence. All assumptions, calibration bases, and sensitivity ranges are disclosed within the report.

8
Post-delivery

Follow-up

A call or meeting can be arranged to walk through the findings.

BARS outputs are decision-support evidence for engaging professionals. They do not replace a registered valuation, accounting opinion, or credit decision.
